Frequently asked Questions

What is it?
The RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) is a fully funded residential course for 16-20 year olds, its aim is to provide young people with the opportunity to grow and develop through challenge. The course is 5 days long and is delivered by Rotary's partner, The Wilderness Company, the course takes place at their dedicated Glamping site in the North Pennines. The course combines adventurous, outdoor activities such as climbing, kayaking and wild swimming with team challenges and a mini expedition. 

What is Rotary?
The Rotary Club is one of the world's largest charities, volutneers globally work together to tackle diseases, disasters and much more local causes too. Youth engagement and development has always been a core interest and this is where RYLA stems from.

Who are The Wilderness Company?
The Wilderness Company are an outdoor activities and experience provider operating Glamping sites across the Durham Dales. Most of their year is spent working with schools offering residential school trips. At heart it is still a family run business with a small dedicated team of highly qualified and passionate staff.

When is it?
RYLA runs over two consecutive weeks 
WEEK 1 - Monday 3rd to Friday 7th of August
WEEK 2 - Monday 10th to Friday 14th August
Presentation Evening - 23rd September 

Where is it?
The RYLA course is hosted at The Wilderness Companies primary base at Low Birk Hatt Farm (DL12 9UX) candidates can make their own way there or arrange support with their sponsoring club.

What's provided?
All food, accommodation and activities are provided.

How much does it cost?
Nothing! The Rotary Club will FULLY FUND the course, however some clubs may ask for a small deposit which will be returned on completion.

Is it for me?
If you like being outside, challenging yourself and meeting new people then this is absolutely for you.
